"Onlar" sadece bireyler yoktur.

In this essay-style picture book, Rylant and Moser team up to tell the tale of the hardworking, spirited people of Appalachia. Reminiscent of James Agee, from whose works the epigraph and subtitle were taken, this book is a quiet lyric description of the Appalachians and the people who live in these hills. We meet the dogs of the mountains, and their owners, whose horizons are more filled with trees than of sky. We come to know the bravery of coal miners, and the legacy of the people who have mined the coal for generations. We come to understand the homesickness that strikes these people, and how it seems to be of the most severe kind. Rylant tells us of the handmade quilts, the homemade cornbread, the thickness of night in the mountains, of church on Sunday mornings and of back porch gatherings Sunday afternoons. We hear of canning in the summers, and snapping beans. We learn of the smell of honeysuckle, the joy of walking dirt roads. And through it all, the constant theme of these Good Dogs of Appalachia, named things like King, or Prince, and coming from places named Coal City, or Sally’s Backbone. Ultimately, what Rylant and Moser deliver here is a textual and pictorial delight—more of a fleeting feeling, really, than a narrative story. Without plot or reason, we are left with what feels like a brush with something beautiful, something familiar, a map on a scrap of paper drawn by an old friend.

I really Enjoyed ASCENSION. I loved all the characters, the storyline, the gods and mythology and I could not wait to get my hands on BEDEVILED. If you have not read ASCENSION please be warned that this review will have spoilers from book 1 in it. Kyana was a half Vampyre half Lychen and is now turning into the new Goddess of the Hunt. Her best friend and roommate Haven is processed by a god set on revenge, She is fighting feelings for her sorta lover Ryker and on top of it all she once again is expected to save humanity. In the beginning of book 1 Kyana was very competitive and extremely arrogant and set in her ways. Kyana had to learn to work with others and let others take the lead. She made mistakes but did things in the end with the best intentions in mind. Kyana is determined to save her best friend Haven from the evil that is taking her over. Throughout BEDEVILED Kyana is plagued with inner struggles as she loses the parts of herself she has always fallen back on. The sexual tension between Kyana and Ryker continues to be high and frustrating. She really does fight her feelings to the end. There is a great deal of action and suspense from beginning to end. The plot is just as good as book 1 and hopefully will continue its awesomeness into book 3. You will be happy to know that BEDEVILED does not end on a cliffhanger like ASCENSION but you will still be left wanting more when its over. I'm not sure what comes next for the new Goddess of the Hunt but I will be looking out for Sable Grace's next release.

I'm a huge fan of Anne Lamott's esssays (a little less so her fiction). Reading her is like reconnecting with an old friend you haven't seen in years but immediately fall back in sync with. She makes it okay not only to write "shitty first drafts" but also to live them because her work-in-progress optimism is so infectious.
