As someone who enjoys detective fiction I enjoyed this book. It's look at the origins of the detective in society and in fiction work well together, and the book itself seems to thread the story at it's core (the murder at road hill house) as a key inspiration behind many plot lines in well known novels since. With that in mind the book bought an added appreciation to other novels I had read (Lady Audley's Secret). I really enjoyed the balance of fact with the touches of what was known of the family's life and it reminded me of In Cold Blood in this respect. It is written from extensive research by Kate Summerscale and so may not be for those who are out for a more fictional who-dunnit. However based on the vast sensationalism the murder created I though Kate Summerscale did a grand job in showing the events without speculation.
I didn’t really get into this book as much as I had hoped. I wrote on Maxine Hong-Kingston’s The Woman Warrior as my senior thesis so I am familiar with her work and style. Hong-Kingston weaves together myth and fact as she recounts the stories of Chinese male immigrants to the United States, from as early as the gold rush and railroad construction to the 1990s. The narratives are detailed, vivid and suggest a mythical historical memory. Her descriptions of the railroad construction by Chinese men and the confusion of the Communist revolution are particularly compelling, but some of the latter stories in the novel were less interesting.
ok, i'm upping the stars on this one. Everytime I have to read it, it gets better. Oddly, his discussion of the irish potato famine is funny (ha ha funny).
c 2003 Very Excellent. It was especially interesting because the author was a midwife where I lived. These births took place in the suburbs of Berkeley, California, including neighborhoods east of the Berkeley tunnel such as Concord and Walnut Creek. I had no idea that this kind of home birth was an option when I had my 10 children there. My insurance did not cover a midwife either at home or in the hospital. Kaiser insurance did.
