That's right. I'm not ashamed. I love Anne of Green Gables. It's a girly book, and that's why it's great! The literary canon is, of course, lacking in great female characters. Anne Shirley is one of the towering exceptions. Imagine a well-written story that captures a slice of life - and that you actually like the characters (take that Faulkner, Steinbeck, Fitzgerald, Hemingway and all you other cynical, white males who wrote depressing stuff!!). If the story wasn't completely episodic, it would be five stars.
The concept was good but it got very overwhelming fast. It's always interesting to read how our North American culture measures up against other cultures and how one simple word can mean so much (or so little).
Any parent of a girl aged 10 to 20 should read this book.
great
