I read an advance review of Prep and I knew immediately wanted to read it. The idea of boarding school fascinated me, much like it fascinates the main character, Lee. I was prepared for disappointment, as sometimes I disagree with reviewers, but I was happily surprised by the book. Curtis Sittenfeld flawlessly recreates a world of privilege that few know about. Her experiences in east coast prep schools have well prepared her to write about the daily interactions between haughty students and fairly clueless teachers. The characters are believable and relatable. You will spend most of the book cringing at the horribly awkward situations Lee gets herself into, but it all pays off in the end.

Men are from Mars, women are from Venus. One Venitian, namely author Norah Vincent, goes on a trip to Mars--and back. You read it right: Vincent dresses as a man for a year and enters many of the male "institutions"--a bowling league, sales jobs, strip clubs, even a monestary. The results aren't what you'd expect. This book isn't for the easily offended. Though it's sometimes raw, it's a compassionate look at men, women and the differences between us.
