Generally enjoyable but could have been more. The book felt shorter than it really was, maybe because the plotting was pretty simple. Fat Charlie's shyness and haplessness was overplayed a bit at the beginning -- I had trouble believing any grown man would be so sensitive; I remember feeling like that as a 14-year-old girl. Rosie hardly existed at all; I couldn't tell you anything about her other than what was down on paper. Her mother, on the other hand, is very real, as is Daisy, Charlie's love interest. I don't feel that the trading of "Anansi's bloodline" got resolved in any meaningful way, unless I missed it.
This is the most intellectually expansive and unified books I've ever read. Whether you're a "big ideas" person or someone who relishes details about anthropology, linguistics, and biology, you will enjoy Diamond's take on the climactic and geological reasons behind why some civilizations become dominant and others fade.
