A remarkable work of (political) sociology -- does great work empirically showing the interlocking networks of the elite class in America -- how the political and corporate elites are connected. It's common sense, but remarkable to see data showing the depth. Also has some excellent history of labor and corporate power in US, and insight into what has kept the left from exerting any meaningful influence in our politics. I was supposed to read this in college; didn't; and read it while working in the soup kitchen. Suddenly it made a lot more sense. (Some things you have to experience to understand -- the problem with segregated education in the US.)

Excellent reference for the Spiritual Exercises ~ as close a literal translation of Ignatius' writing from 15th/16th century Spanish to English as I am aware. A note of caution ~ without taking the in the context and traditions of his time, expressions found in this book, like "The enemy conducts himself as a woman" can take on a completely distorted meaning ~ I have been told by various Ignatian spiritual directors that what he most likely meant was "The enemy conducts himself as a *disordered* woman." Not recommended for the average layperson except under the guidance of a spiritual director.
