Incredible sequel. I was slow getting into it, because everything was different. Nearly the entire first book was about Todd, Viola, and Manchee, running from the army together, running from Aaron together. At the start of this book, Todd and Viola are separated, and many of the characters I was so used to were no longer there, and a bunch of new characters were introduced, and part of me just wanted to stay in the pattern of the first book. But once I got into it, I really got into it. One of the things that I found so interesting in the first book was the portrayal of cruelty, violence, and brutality. There was plenty of that in this book, but worse. Mayor Prentiss is a terrifying character . . . and I devoured every single one of his scenes. It was also neat to get to know Davy better; he was deeper than what we saw in the first book. I also really liked the scenes with the Spackle. Descriptions of their treatment seemed like an allusion to the Holocaust, to me. I enjoyed the addition of Viola's perspective in the novel. She is a fantastic female character, and it was great to hear her thoughts. Her and Todd are a wonderful pair, simply unstoppable. Already started the first few pages of MONSTERS OF MEN. Can't wait to continue.
