Another good read by Marillier.However, I didn't like the heroine as much as the last book, and found the intense romance between her and the Bran more than slightly unbelievable.
I started reading this after seeing the trailer for the upcoming film for the first time and all of a sudden I was desperate to read this. I did start to read this before but I remember I only got as far as the appearance of Gandalf then stopped. I thought this book was over-all very good, however I did think that some parts of it were longer than should have been and some parts were too short, for example the Mirkwood chapters dragged on a bit for my liking and I do think the battle of the five armies could have been longer but other than that it is written very well! I do like the maps at the front and back of the book and also the sketches and colour illustrations (some of which happened to fall in the wrong places I felt, but maybe that is my copy)Whilst reading I could also see Martin Freeman in my head so I think he will be perfect for the film! Richard Armitage for Thorin too, again fantastic casting! A friend of mine at school spoilt the end for me, but I sort of knew it was coming as I had played the game on the PS2 - you gotta love that game! I will definitely be reading the Lord of the Rings to find out what comes next!
