An interesting take on a rape fantasy. The man hates his wife, but little does he know that another woman has taken her place. So when he's pushing her around, he's pushing around a woman who doesn't deserve it, but who still loves him.

once the second part of the book began i enjoyed it immensely but through the first part of the book it lagged for me. the photographs are beautiful.

I love Alice Hoffman's novellas. They can be read in a couple hours (or less) and they're such wonderful stories. I can read them again and again.

Donna Tartt loves language...in a way that's almost obsessive. She's OCD-ed over it. I love her impeccable puritan classical style. She's the modern equivalent of classical authors. Anyway if you have a guilty pleasure category for preppy novel settings then this one's for you. With a murder thrown in to boot.

Simply awesome: you'll learn about whaling, Nantucket, and how the dark soul of man pits itself against Nature and the Divine (and consequently loses).

It's an enjoyable book but doesn't compare to her other books in my opinion.

** spoiler alert ** I was disappointed by this book. I was expecting so much more of the beauty of China. Instead what I read was a negative picture of a country bogged down with bureaucrats and history mostly from the Maoist period. I wanted more of the myths, legends and romanticism that must surely be found alongside the Yangtze. Most disappointing of all was that having travelled for weeks, and against the odds, making it far into Tibet (which was virtually closed to foreigners in 1995), Simon & Lily didn't actually make it to either of the two recognised sources of the river, instead they stopped short and journeyed back to Shanghai. I felt like a bride jilted at the altar!

This book was so well written and I loved it, even though the ending made me cry.

If you only read two books in your life make it these two!
