I think I am on the third book by Khoury, I like the detail of the setting his novels exist in. I have not been all that interested in the ending, just like that stories continue.
This book was strange but it kept me turning pages. It's a suspenseful book and full of excitement.
An excellent book until the last 100 pages or so. The beginning of this story of an independent woman coming of age in New England is wonderful; full of humor, drama and atmosphere. You are transported from the Kentucky woods, to an island lighthouse, then onto a whaling ship and finally to Nantucket. There are occasional jumps of fancy which are easily overlooked with the enjoyment of the story.[return][return]The end of the story is disappointing. The author pulls in multiple historical figures and threads of various themes which are not central to the story, leading to a feeling of fragmentation.
What a book, the fear and sadness you feel for Susie is amazing.
