Although this book is based around the time of World War 2, the main tragedy does not concern the war. The story revolves around a young, sweet yet abused boy (Willie) who is evacuated to the countryside to live with a widow; Mr Tom. Having been abused, Willie is malnourished and as expected frightened of almost everything. As the story commences the author shares with the reader the increasingly srong bond being built between a man who lost his child as an infant and a boy who in essence has never had a parent. The first time I ever read this book was when I was a teenager. The effect of this book on me was so intense that I can visually remember exactly where I was sitting and in what position whilst reading the book. 'Goodnight Mr Tom' was one of the first ever books that completely gripped my attention. The content was so tense, emotional and at times even serene that for as long as I was reading that book I was entirely oblivious to everything and everyone around me. Every word written in this book was heartfelt and it is obvious that it was written with passion. This story was so moving that I remember my eyes welling up and bursting into tears at many different points in the book especially after discovering the lengths Mr Tom went to in order to get Willie back. 'Goodnight Mr Tom' is a beautiful and touching story that reminds everybody in life to never give up hope. When the world is dark and scary there is always a shining light ready to save us. It reminds us that sometimes blood isn't thicker than water and bonds can be made with anyone. For everyone reading the book it sends a message that true love exists.
LOVE IT!!! MY FAVORITE BOOK EVER!!!!
