You Are Free consists of 8 short stories about women and identity. The women in the stories are multi-racial/bi-racial, just as the author is and it gives both an interesting and authentic vantage point, and though I couldn't relate to that, I could definitely relate to the characters and the stories. The stories all center on women and the identities they have or are perceived to have. They are all trying to find where they belong. Do they not belong because of their uniqueness or do they belong to a whole category of those who are unique? The writing seems effortless and I couldn't get over how easily you slip into the characters' lives. I was touched at the motherhood parts of the stories and the characters who were mothers and how they changed. It's a discerning book that is an entirely satisfying read, and it's a breeze, I read it in a day. I won this book in a goodreads first reads giveaway. I hadn't read anything of Senna's prior to this, but I think I'll look into it now. p.14 It looked run down, slightly too hippie to be hygenic. p.50 She reminded Jackie of a high school guidance counselor, somebody settled and sexless. p.111 She recalled the drive from the airport in Albuquerque, how dark clouds moving across the sky seemed to ride alongside her rental car like a herd of wild horses. In New York, weather just happened. Here, it announced itself from miles away.
