Skim is an overweight teenager who has trouble making friends and finding her place in the world. The story explores a variety of issues, including sexual orientation, depression, and relationships. This was a very relatable graphic novel about high school and fitting in. The illustrations were fantastic and helped to create a moving story.
For my money, The Corrections is a far superior novel to Freedom. I think Franzen has far more insight into the 90s boom than the 00s bust, I think the characters here are people I know, not vehicles for a novel, and I like that Franzen is merciless in his portrayal of the world he has created in The Corrections -- by lending compassion to the characters in Freedom he undercuts his own gift as a writer, which is brutal satire. The one thing that annoyed me equally in both novels wad the heavy-handed insertion of the titular word into just about every page of text. We get it. This book is about corrections. That book is about freedom. Enough already!
