This was a semi page turner--that means it basically held my interest. It is a mystery of two murders--one of which goes back to Renaisance days and another more modern. Wasn't bad!
Not bad, but a bit too "texty" for me. Good stories about how all of the Supreme Court justices didn't exactly get along (Sandra Day O'Connor & Clarence Thomas basically hated each other for awhile), while some were lifetime friends (Sandra Day & William Rehnquist). Talks about how Presidents decided upon Supreme Court nominees was fascinating, and how a Reagon nominee got blindsided in the confirmation meetings (A precurser to the live-televised Clarence Thomas/Anita Hill thing). Decent read for a nonfiction...I'd give it a 5.
Anytime I find a terrific nonfiction picture book, I get excited. This one made me jump up and down. (Unfortunately I never had dance lessons!) Authors Jan Greenberg and Sandra Jordan had already made me green with envy by writing Action Jackson. With this book, they did it again. Somehow they managed to take all the complex personalities and talents that defined Martha Graham, Aaron Copland, and Isamu Noguchi - and communicated the essence of the artists in brief, direct sentences that explain how Appalachian Spring became a ground-breaking classic. The authors don't shy away from the less than pretty parts, like Martha's temper tantrums, because those were part of the story, too. Brian Floca's art is perfect, too, including the varied use of large and small scenes on various pages. For this book, I think every aspect was perfect - the research and storytelling, writing, art direction and art. A new favorite of mine.
