Another wonderful by by Allende
A great read. My favourite among Kundera's work
The author jumps around quite a bit but has some interesting theories on how epidemics occur. He uses the same ideas of why crime rates decreased quickly and hush puppy shoes hit a new popularity to discuss how to prevent teenage smoking. Not sure I agree with it all but interesting.
** spoiler alert ** New York City, 1930s. Upper and working classes mix, though all is not what it seems. I enjoyed the twists in the book, predicting one in particular, but not others. I did not realize in starting the book what was the inspiration for the title: George Washington's 110 Rules of Civility, which he wrote as a young man and play a role in the story as one character's "guide to life." Having just seen a display of these same Rules of Civility at the current George Washington exhibit (from Mount Vernon) at the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia, I particularly enjoyed this twist. An enjoyable summer and Hurricane Irene read.
Started reading a few of these last summer...I am particularly vulnerable to series mysteries in the summer it seems. I like that the male protagonist is not overly macho, he is a loving father. I like his approach to life and parenting...less is more as far as stuff goes. But I have grown a bit weary of the rest. It does give an idyllic view of Martha's Vineyard and makes New England seem appealing, not always an easy taks if I am the audience!
The library demanded it back but it was good.
A lovely dog story.
