This is one of my favorite books, a "comfort-food" read. I first read it probably 10 years ago, and re-read it often. It's one of my default books, for when I really need to read something but don't want to start anything brand new and want something soothing and familiar. I love the way Lisa Mason wrote this book; her writing style, her choice of tense and words. Everthing about this book works for me; the concept, the story, the characters. And every time I read it, I come away with something new.

i read 'path of revenge' the first book of kirkpatrick's second trilogy and was most impressed. so i went back to read this the first book of his original trilogy and was surprisingly disappointed. i believe kirkpatrick is himself a cartographer and he obviously has a vast understanding of landscapes and ecosystems. the problem is that he fills (what seems like) 75% of each chapter with grand descriptions of his world and severely neglects character and plot development. maybe some people are into this heavy emphasis on descriptive writing -- and it certainly does make his world seem large and alive -- but it was only my own illogical drive to finish any book that i start that kept me going throughout the first 300 pages. the following 300 pages were a slight improvement. i am still interested to see where this tale goes next, but i do hope the delivery quickly begins to resemble his more recent work.

Interesting book that stirred a lot of controversy.. the guys philosophy of life is very self driven- he hates the AA method and is very atheist.. there is also a lot of cursing in this book and it is quite graphic in its detail of subtance abuse and other addictions

I picked up the book because of the cover. I like to read young adult/teen novels from time to time and I bought a book based on its cover...and title. I was not disappointed.

The first chapter is NOT disappointing. One worries so with a sequel. It's a very good book, but I am bothered by a few factual lapses. It seems silly in such an edifying book to fuss, but here are my quibbles 1) Catholics do not and never have used the King James translation at Mass. (p.110) This bothered me, trying to figure out why someone as knowledgeable as the author would falsify the scripture quote. 2) It’s “eternal rest grant unto them”, not “rest eternal.” (p.235) Odd. Why reverse it? 3) Private masses said by monks alone before they communally celebrate Mass? (p.100.) I don’t think so.
