I must say, this book was extremely tence, had me bouncing with anticipation. Other than some not so real discription of characters that get well quickly. It is a quick read and I loved it. However, it is very gory, if you don't mind that, I highly recomend it.

Deep characterization and a compelling plot kept me reading into the wee hours a couple of nights in a row. I fell in love with the midwife and her family. Loved it!

I went through a "women of the Beat Generation" phase a couple of years ago. The author of this one was Kerouac's girlfriend while he was writing On the Road. While she's not an amazing writer, I liked a lot of the retrospective stuff she had written about her time with Kerouac and with other players on the beat scene. Good moxie in those women--after all, they had to put up with all those lunatic men somehow.
