I was hugely disappointed in this book. The critics have been raving about it, but I really couldn't get into it. Natalia, the main character, is a doctor in on of the countries (probably Yugoslavia) that suffered from ethnic unrest before breaking up. She is trying to solve the mystery of her Grandfather's death. The novel incorporates various myths and legends, particularly the one about Gavran Gaile, the Deathless Man. Ultimately, the overall theme is death. The problem is Natalia is not a particularly engaging character. The writing itself, however, is very good, and Obreht, the young author, shows promise.
