As irmãs D'Este, Beatrice e Isabella, competen pelo amor de um dos príncipes mais influentes da Itália- Ludovico Sforza. O príncipe tem como artista principal da corte Leonardo da Vinci, que acaba deixando muitas de suas obras inacabadas e as irmãs disputando um auto-retrato feito por ele.
This was a good story exploring themes about family dynamics, adultery, memories, and race relations... but as a mystery novel, I didn't find it particularly suspenseful. The main mystery is that of what happened to Callie's baby, whose body was never found. But there was no build up of suspense, and I didn't find the revelation to be satisfying either. This was my first Lippman novel and I have another one on my to-read shelf, and I hope that one will be better.
