This is the book that made me an english major! We read it... discussed it... tore it apart in my fifth grade class. I loved it! Lowry is a fantastic writer for the challenging 'tween readers -- presenting intense concepts and implications on an accessibl level. The Giver explores the dangers of sanitizing and desensitizing the world, rather than experiencing how terrible and joyful it can be. Booktalk this!: 5th-6th graders, school visits.
