A controlled world in which a select few govern; an oligarchy; restrictive and regulated and impassive. I want in! Well, not "in" in, but this story, set in a future time, serves as a warning for what could happen when people fear simple, yet complex, emotions. The easy vocabulary makes it good read for children as well.
It was very different in comparison to the first book--all of them are, but I didn't like it as much as I did the first book. It had a lot of great ideas but I felt like L'Engle was too theoretical and there wasn't as much plot or as much understanding of the happenings therein. It wasn't as sentimental as the first book. It's hard to pin down my feelings on it because it felt like L'Engle wasn't sharing as much with us, almost as though we were distant from Meg, when she was the one who was carrying us into the story.
Fantastic! But as a person who has watched Pink Flamingos on Christmas Eve more than once, I might be biased. Regardless, this might be the first book I ever wanted to call big-hearted, without a trace of irony in my voice.
