Begins faintly reminiscent of Robin McKinley's "The Blue Sword", but ends up in much different places. Among other things, the heroine is completely unlike, and the magic has a perhaps more Mercedes Lackey feel to it. Not unpleasant, but unexpected, to my eyes. I did enjoy the story, although the ending was rather more predictable than not.

What do people see in Michael Chabon? I've read one brief novel by him that was ho-hum and I've repeatedly tried to get through this first novel by the acclaimed author. I give up. His writing is in the doldrums and his dialogue is stiff and artificial. Or is there something wrong with me? I'm giving him one more chance with The Adventures of Kavalier & Clay...sooner or later.
