Seriously depressing. But, unfortunately very true. What really comes through in a book like this for me is how much the balance of power in society has shifted slightly, but has remained essentially unchanged. Basically the reins of power are in the hands of fewer and fewer; the oligarchical structures that have always maintained control have shrunken, distilled themselves, and ossified into seemingly invulnerable arrangements. Umrigar's thesis is (among others): if you're poor, you're screwed. It will only be a matter of time before the rich chews you up and spits you out, i.e. uses and/or exploits you and then destroys you when your usefulness is at an end. I recoil from this conclusion, but I also can't whole heartedly refute the veracity of the assertion. Being poor, as I pretty much am being that I'm one or two paychecks away from living on the street, you can see where the depressing part arises.

When you read this book, it's impossible to believe that Julia Cameron has accomplished what she has considering the things she's gone through. She certainly has had an up and down life, some of the downs seem to be of her own doing. It was fascinating though and worth the time.
I really liked this one. I didn't LOVE it, but I really liked it. I thought there was a good amount of plot here but the sex was important. It was the foundation of their encounter a year ago, so it was going to be at the forefront now. One thing that kept me from giving this 5 stars was the fact that Lisa was just so ready to write Eli off at the smallest little thing even though he kept proving himself again and again. I felt like she needed to give him a bit of a break. But, other than that. I thought it was hot, sweet, and very quick read. I have to read Be Mine since it took place prior to this one. This was my first read by this author but I look forward to reading some more of her stuff.
Jessica Valenti does a great job exposing the purity myth - the idea that women should be judged by their sexuality, and are impure if they rebel against "traditional" gender roles in any way - and its consequences. I really like how she ties together many of the problems that women face - the virgin/whore dichotomy, rape culture, victim blaming - and presents them as all issues that are related to the idea that when women are judged by a standard of purity that relates to sexual activity, it hurts everyone.
