After I read this, I discovered that the two parts were written separately as short stories. I had not realized that before starting it -- I thought it was all one novel. Although both stories focus on the same family and the themes overlap, it made much more sense as two separate pieces. I enjoyed this and thought the characters were phenomenal. I wish I had someone to discuss it with or was part of a class assigned to read this.
