This is the book that introduced me to Gabriel Garcia Marquez, and changed my list of favorite authors forever. He rose to near the top of my list. This novel is a story of family, and all the magic and mystery you find therein. I know I say this a lot...but read this book!
Way overwritten, often too much detail to maintain interest, and too much of an aspect from the ground up, meaning lots of complaining about the stupidity of policy makers. But there is information and insight obtainable skimming and finding the nuggets. Also some amazing narratives, like the Northern Alliance cavalry charge against the Taliban.
A bit difficult to get into, but an excellent read overall - avant-garde, moving, and flawless style.
