A well written story about women prisoners of war in Malaya. The book is based on true events, but changed up. The book has Enlgish women being taken captive by the Japanes during WWII (really Dutch women). They're marched around from place to place and half of them die. Not too disturbing in the details. Probably over half the story takes place in Australia 6 years after the war. I really enjoyed reading about the outback and creation of a town. It was nice to return to an older book and it's writing style.
A lover sits aside while his love grows to as near to god as she can - alone. And their reaching each other is sacrificed for the greater love of God, but doesn't cool down but develops more and more deep in her heart. It trully puts you down for sometime: Should we leave everything we love, despite their love, to reach our creator?
This is one of those rare books I feel that I should read every year. It is profoundly wise, detailing the joys of living, looking at the world with wonder, to truly love. An aging father writes to his young son, knowing that his son doesn't have long to know him. Not for those who's reading is bound to plot lines. One of my favorite books.
