Really enjoyed most of this, but the ending was overly dramatic and didn't fit with the intelligence of the rest of the book. Also, the section where the main character was carrying out a scheme that the reader was unaware of was annoying. It didn't fit with the structure of the narration and seemed like a cheap ploy for added suspense.
It's just a story about rabbits, right? Not really. (-: What a wonderfully told story about courage, family, friendship, kindness, and valuing those in your life for who they truly are, even though they may be different from you. After I finished this book last night I thought to myself "I feel the same way as if I had read this when I was 12 or 13." An odd thought but I think it means that as I read this novel, I lost myself in the characters and the narrative as I tended to do when I was younger. Now I know why somebody told me they read this every year. Such an enjoyable book!
I had the pleasure in my lifetime to take a tutorial from Stevens at a USENIX conference before he passed. It was an experience I will never forget. All of his books capture his ability to transfer very complex information in a way that no one else can quite do for me. Just like you will always remember that teacher who really made your wheels turn, I will always be greatful to Richard Stevens for his contribution to UNIX and TCPIP networking.
I received an advanced copy from a Goodreads giveaway. I would definitely recommend that you pick this book up in November. I don’t read a ton of mysteries, but I enjoyed reading this one. The chapters are very short, which naturally leads you to just want to read one (or four) more. The mystery component is very good. I really had no idea what was happening until the end, which in my mind is the goal of a mystery writer. The best part of this book, however, was the excellent characterization of Nina and her husband Morten. Their relationship was so interesting and authentic. He is understandably frustrated by his wife’s disappearances every time someone shows up in need. Nina herself struggles with her desire to help others over her own family. She finds it hard to balance the passion she feels for the victims she encounters with her desire to be a good mother and wife. I think that there are a lot of good mysteries and mystery series, but the most important component is a really compelling protagonist. I hope the rest of the series is published in the US soon. literarylindsey.blogspot.com
This book made me hate the movie. It's so much better and has some great insights into the rule by government. A must read for anyone who has questioned how a people should govern themselves. It doesn't necessarily answer that question, but it does lend insight into it.
