I read this series in its entirety every year or so. I want to say it's a kid's version of LOTR, but in its scope and emotional weight, it's far more than just children's literature.
This is a young adult book. Like everything Sherman Alexie creates, I loved this book. It is the story, told in 1st person, of a teenaged boy growing up on a reservation. It tells of his struggle to escape the "rez" and the loyalty conflict his escape creates. The narrator is a lovable and authentic character. A must-read for 13+ year olds. (There's a whole discussion of masturbation that little kids are probably not up to just yet as well as some pretty realistic portrayals of alcoholics.)
