I finished this, then left it in someone else's waiting room, in case anybody out there wants it. For my review, couldn't put it better than Jay,read his if you're interested.
Outstanding collection of stories. Each is different enough from the rest to show inventiveness, while they retain the author's voice. Looking forward to reading the rest of her work.
I really did like this book. It is wonderfully done and I like how each chapter focuses on a different person & their loved ones. The pictures are fantastic and I really like the format of this book. I recommend it to young & old people alike.
I'm still in the process of reading this one (how do you get the thingy to mark it as "to read," "reading," or "read"?). So far the structure has been fairly standard--set up a front story then move back and forth in time. So it's good if you're writing something in the same vein as that. Gruen transitions smoothly from past to present and the backstory (so far) has pressing importance to the front plot line. I also admire how she writes the elderly, or, put another way, writes a man who is essentially a passive character (sitting around at an old-age home). Her main protag. is lively and sharp, and he delivers such wonderful lines. So, all in all, I am down with this book.
