Jodi Picoult has made her big-time debut with My Sister's Keeper, which I think is over hyped and by far not her best book thus far. After dabbling in other themes and geographic places in her more recent books, Nineteen Minutes demonstrates the Picoult's talent as a researched and gifted writer has not dissipated, rather has matured. What I really enjoyed about NM was her extensive and compassionate research on the affects of bullying. This book is eerie, especially as someone who has grown up in an era of school shooting and the reconciliation that comes with that. It is eerie because it references the psychological complexity of how bullying affects people, but not JUST traditional bullying, but also domestic violence, parenting, and social ills. Don't expect this one to be made into a movie for a little while, the topic is still sensitive yet necessary to facilitate discussion and healing.
