This is a bizarre but amazingly gripping book. I was working my way through some of the Booker prize nominations from previous years and this was a real surprise, tucked away amongst the piles of stuff by better known authors was this real gem that deserves more recognition. The tortured main character of the Duke is beautifully described and I couldn't put it down until I had discovered the tragic ending. I definitely need to put other books by Mick Jackson on my reading list.
Gently funny, lightning-fast to read, completely inconsequential. Get it from the library, read it in an afternoon, chuckle, read a few passages to your friends, return it, and forget it.
