The Marriage Plot is mostly the story of English major, Madeline Hanna. Another lost college grad of the 1980's, Madeline is stuck between the world in which she lives and the world in which she studies, namely her thesis on the analysis of marriage in literature, thus The Marriage Plot. When Madeline meets Leonard, however, everything changes. Enamored but Leonard, Madeline doesn't know he also suffers from manic depression. Suddenly, Madeline is not only questioning her studies, but she's also begins questioning the lengths she herself would go to for someone she loves. I say the story is mostly about Madeline because the point of view toggles back and forth between her and Mitchell, another lost college graduate who decides to travel to find himself, but no matter how hard he tries, all roads lead back to Madeline. The Marriage Plot was a decent book, the depictions of manic depression alone, glaringly realistic. There are no easy answers with with mania, or with love. If I could change anything I would have made the lead in to the "meat" of the book a bit shorter because it took a while to get to the crux of the story.

Fire-Heart: A Tale of Alterra, The World That Is is book two of the trilogy, and it continues the main quest to destroy Gorgon Elfhunter, sworn enemy and menace to all Elven people. This installment includes a side quest to find Orogon's brother, and it takes the company to the far southern reaches of Altera - a hot, unbearable stretch of desert. As with the first book, this is a long story with many adventures along the way, but you always have the feeling Gaelen, Nelwyn, and the rest of the company will find a means to overcome any adversity. I think this is a good young adult epic fantasy series, and since it features strong female characters, I think it would be a great choice for girls to read. There is some swordplay, very little of what people would think of magic, but a lot of friendship, love, and devotion between the members of the company to accomplish their mission.
