Abeer Yusuf Yusuf itibaren Wustrow, Almanya
** spoiler alert ** This is not a bad book. I kept hearing about the "twist" but it was really obvious within a few chapters that the heroine was illiterate so I kept waiting and waiting for some other twist. I shouldn't really blame the author for this. It is a result of the release of a major studio movie based on the book as well as the blurb reviews in the back, all of which keep talking about the big secret that a person would rather not reveal. I am not entirely convinced that the portrait of this heroine- so circumspect and brutally scrupulous in her job-performance- gels with her actions in letting herself be committed for major crimes rather than reveal that she cannot read. But then again that is only a feeling. It is a sweet love story in many ways and there is no faulting the honesty with which the author has captured the eroticism and uncertainty of the romance between a youth and a woman.
More of a character study than much of a mystery…although many secrets were revealed in the end. This was a book that I've owned for some time from my TBR bookshelf. I placed it on my bed stand but I read it intermittingly, which makes it hard to review. I was constantly refreshing my memory of some of the characters. It is a thoughtful, well written novel.
