Yes, it's derivative. But it's derived from some of the best ideas in literature, including Farhenheit 451 and The Giver. I thoroughly enjoyed this book AND it was written well. Plus, I have to cheer for the home team: former English teachers who write!

Even cornier than Binchy, if that's possible. Ultimate life in small English village circa 1960ish books--there's a whole series! Love them love them love them. A few times, when we've been in the car, I've turned them on briefly (on tape) and Jamie was very, very afraid. : )
In a realm where monsters exist, half-human Lady Fire struggles to comes to terms with her monster nature (irresistible beauty, ability to make people do her will) as she is caught up in political intrigue and unplanned romantic entanglement. Another really strong fantasy adventure with a powerful female protagonist. Loosely linked (in setting) to author's previous, wonderful, book 'Graceling.'
I read this while at Cozzetta's this past week. I think it was good, to show how siblings (five sisters) can get torn apart and how they could get back together thru the love of their grandmother and each other.
