Having enjoyed the anime for Hellsing, for the most part, I picked up the manga with a bit of excitement. I was ready to see how the manga was compared to the anime and, I hoped, that it would be better by a wide margin. I felt cheated when I finished. It's not that the anime for Hellsing is any better, it's that I had many problems with the dialogue through the manga. The dialogue for Alexander Anderson was impossible to understand. I sat there for about fifteen minutes trying to decipher what he was saying just in two panels. After that, I just couldn't get back into the story. There were other moments where I felt the dialogue was choppy and that characters were given a script before they started a conversation. I'm not sure if this is the manga-ka's fault or the translator's fault. The art and characters that I could understand weren't bad. I didn't feel immediately attached to anyone in particular, but it was interesting to see the characters interact the way they did. Some of the frames in the manga caught my attention, especially the frames with blood. The manga-ka is really good at drawing scenes with blood everywhere. It's almost inviting horror fans into the pages. The art and characters weren't enough to save the manga for me, though. I won't be reading volume two.
