This was a great read. It's a story of forbidden love. Mail-order bride, Amelia, travels to Ft. Worth from Georgia to meet her intended in order to escape memories of the Civil War and to build a new life. Unfortunately, her intended could not meet her and sent his brother, Houston, instead. It was supposed to take 3 weeks to reach their ranch in West Texas. It takes considerably longer due to several mishaps like snake bites, swollen rivers, bad storms, etc. They both are fighting the attraction because they know it is an impossible situation. Houston has been disfigured and has lost his left eye and part of his face during the war. He thinks he is undeserving of love. Amelia has her own demons to deal with and believes that what she is feeling is not love but merely lust. There are several dramatic moments leading to their HEA. Can't wait now to read Dallas's story in the next installment. I just have to find a copy. This was definitely worth the read even though I tend to prefer stories with a little more spice. But it's been a long time since I read a book in a day.
