i only remember disliking this book. i was also v young.
Dear Lord I loved this book. I've only read a handful of Hemingway, but this fictionalized insight into his first marriage made me want to explore more. I loved nearly everything about this book. Loved the famous "characters" that populated the novel (the Fitzgeralds, Gertrude Stein, Sherwood Anderson...), and how they were just as well developed as Hadley & Ernest. Some of the passages concerning the loss of love and trust broke my heart and brought me to tears. What I know: Ernest was a bastard and a terrible friend and husband. What frustrated me: Hadley. Not that she stayed, not that she loved Ernest and wanted it to work. That she stayed SILENT. I just adored it and think I'll have a book hangover trying to find something just as good. Incidentally, I just saw that "Z" is released soon--a novel about Zelda & Scott Fitzgerald.......gonna grab it tomorrow! I'm in a '20s state of mind....
