Everyone always talks about how great Haruki Murakami is, and this book is supposed to be one of his best. I don't know- maybe I'm missing something, but it was painful. I had to stop reading it. Maybe it was too Japanese for me?
A great love story spanning over 40+ years. Towards the end of the book, it takes an unexpected turn when it jumps almost forty years ahead and brings another character story into play. A nice read that is hard to put down.
Glen Runciter is dead. Or is everybody else? Someone died in an explosion orchestrated by Runciter's business competitors. And, indeed, it's the kingly Runciter whose funeral is scheduled in Des Moines. But in the meantime, his mourning employees are receiving bewildering - and sometimes scatological - messages from their boss. And the world around them is warping in ways that suggest that their own time is running out. Or already has. This book keeps you wondering what is true, what is imagination, if Runciter is suspended in half-life dreaming all of this up... or if it's happening while he's in a moratorium... or if someone else is dreaming this up...
