I expected this book to be more engaging than it was. While the storyline of a child growing up in Kabul, Afghanistan, is endearing and memorable, some of the scenes are a bit contrived. Five stars because this was really enjoyed by both girls and boys in storytime and I think the parents found it amusing. The repetion is fun but a little complex for smaller kids to link into.
An incredibly unique and captivating story within a web of choices that all converge upon one fate. Markus Zusak reminds readers what books are all about: Not the telling of a story, but the reveal of how a story came to be.
