this is one of those classic examples of colonialist imaginings of tragic savagery. in other words, it was really popular in the 19th century and really messed up.
A lot of people were disappointed with this but I really enjoyed it. It probably helped that my expectations were lowered after reading the middling reviews. This is more of a retelling of several Jane Austen novels with 'magic' thrown in.
The star of this book seems to be the main character's sexual orientation, and the storyline merely a backdrop to facilitate this. The main character's sexual orientation feels like an attempt to exploit the pocketbooks of those with 'alternative sexual lifestyles'. The main character is not fleshed out, and the author misses many opportunities to help us understand him. The author also misses key moments to enlarge the readers' viewpoint on choice of sexual orientation. If this book is aimed towards readers with alternative sexual tastes, it is my belief they are being sorely exploited and sorely short-changed.
