I learned so much more about Afghanistan than I ever imagined I could from a book. What a wonderfully moving story that everyone should read. It's the kind of book you absolutely don't want to put down.
Reading these made me want to open a vein - but in a good way. The poems are spare and raw, direct and lyrical, kind and demanding. Love letters of grief and anger and forgetting, three decades after a loss that still shakes the literary world.
I am sure this is considered a "graphic novel," but that makes it sound like either a book with superheroes acting out Shakespeare, or a book you should hide under your bed when you hear someone coming ....The Arrival, on the other hand, is a book that I would be delighted to share with anyone; so I prefer to call it a word-less book. The Arrival is crazy original in its depiction of the immigrant experience. You start out thinking you know where it is going...but wrong, wrong, wrong. Honestly, I found that annoying at first until I realized it was rather enchanting and powerful. You don't need to love history to enjoy this book, but historical understanding makes the story that much more poignant.
