Not my favorite Steinbeck. It makes sense when you discover that this book was written in response to Jeffers's popularity at the time, but overall, not the Steinbeck I've come to know and love (e.g. East of Eden, Of Mice and Men)
I read this book for the frist time, when i was a senior in high school. I adored it then - though thought the portrayl of love was cynical. In re-reading it I ahve tended to skip over some of the travel-logue type passages, and find more in it that I both like and dislike.
