First off, everyone insisting that this is lifted from The Giver needs to read Brave New World by Aldous Huxley and then you'll see who's lifting who. And Brave New World was written in 1932... I think the themes of being completely controlled by a society and having your emotions controlled are just too general themes in Dystopian novels to say that they are plagiarizing one author or another. On that note, I loved this book! It really grabs your attention, and I cannot wait for the sequel! Dystopian books are really hit or miss for me, but this was a definite hit. As we are drawn into Cassia's world, we began to see what is wrong with her world as she does. I think this presents the dystopia in a new light, as our main character does not initially think anything is wrong with her society. It lets you see how dystopias can seem like the best option.

I can understand why it is on nearly everyone's best of science fiction list. He created a character you genuinely felt compassion for. Apparently he ruined it with every sequel.
