I looked into this book because I am a massive Mer-fanatic. The book itself has a good story. An adult version of the Disney version of The Little Mermaid meets Hans Christian Anderson's original story. The book is much darker than Disney's retelling, though less detrimental and finite than Hans Christian Anderson's original tale. The similarities to Disney's tale lie in that the mermaid is the youngest daughter of the Royal merfamily. She longs to be in the "Upper World" and has treasures belonging to dead sailors and visits shipwrecks. She also falls in love with a prince she saves and washes ashore with him staring longingly into his eyes, singing to him and wishing she could be part of his world/ However that is where the similarities seem to stop. Hans Christian Anderson's original tale takes a stronger grip of the story. Her grandmother tells tales of the human soul, the eighteenth birthday solitary visit to the surface etc. The story is blatantly set in a time when the earth was divided into N,S,E,W and though it is not clear, I got from the book that there was still a state of Pangaea. Turgeon brings about the idea of God heavily in the book, at times I felt she was bible bashing Religious belief into the reader as the sentiment is entirely Christian, and at times I felt as though she was just heavily trying to convey a message of how important God and a higher being were to people at that time. The story itself is excellent. I had an enormous issue with the editing. Her editor must have been out the night before because the length of the sentences, starting sentences with the word And, oxford commas, frequent and incorrect over use of the word And in sentences and incorrect use of commas, even spelling errors made the book a chore for me to read. Overall if you can get passed the errors in editing you will enjoy the book. I am excited to see this made into a motion picture.
Though it isn’t a biography, American Wife is loosely inspired by the life of former first lady Laura Bush. While the story is interesting, the writing is mixed. Parts of the book are very engaging, pulling the reader into the life of “Alice” while other sections are riddled with details that seem to have little relation to the story. Being very liberal, I was surprised to find myself routing for Alice and wondering about the balance between fact and fiction... Overall, I recommend this book. I am looking forward to hearing what you think about it Andy…shall I mail it to you???
