This book is beautifully written. Not the happiest story, but incredibly well told and poignant.
A riviting first novel with compelling and fully realized characters. A coming of age tale in the tradition of "To Kill a Mockingbird" and "Catcher in the Rye" without the least bit of sentimentality, but a huge amount of heart. The kind of book where you end up caring deeply about each and every imperfect character. When I finished the book, I felt like I KNEW all these people and I knew how much the author cared about them, too, despite her unflinching portrayal of the unforgiveable things their pain led them to say and do. The setting, too, is beautifully realized (and the horses, too). I sure hope Aryn Kyle (who is only 29?!) keeps writing...
