I read this for a book group and was prepared not to like it once I found it in the history section of Borders. Although the story interweaves a mass-murderer plot, what fascinated me were the side stories about the 1893 Chicago World's Fair... the inventions, debuts, and engineering feats. Loved it!
Lauren does a great job at her debut. Wither is brilliantly written, it flows easily, giving the facts little by little, instigating you to keep reading. The future that she built is totally possible, and she shows the both sides of it, the not-so-favored side, fighting for their lives everyday and the rich side, that lives the short years comfortably. Rhine was forced into this rich side, but she is far from happy for it, all she wants is the life she had with her brother back. Makes you think, would you give up freedom and the people you love for wealthy and comfort? The characters are really charming, Rhine is caring and strong, Linden is lovely, though he's pretty naive, Jenna was my favorite character, she is beautiful, caring, strong-willed and simple, her motivations are clear and she manages everything gracefully, Cecily seems annoying but she's simply as naive as Linden, Gabriel was whom I liked less, he is just too simple, I can't see his motivations nor his qualities. The end was not what I wanted, but it’s definitively a great book.
