I absolutely loved this book! I assumed that this book would be similar to something by Jane Austen, don't ask me why, but it was so much more. Yes, it was indeed a love story, but it was so much more. There were times when I would look at the cover and say to myself, "Is this really Jane Eyre?" This book surprised me a lot more than I anticipated and the love story is just beautiful. I highly recommend this book!
Fantastic. Le Carre's second book is much more of a traditional whodunit than anything else he wrote - despite the presence of George Smiley, there is no trace of espionage or the international concerns that dominate his other novels. This is, quite literally, an old-school mystery - as a favor to a friend, Smiley investigates a murder at an Eton-like public boys' school. Le Carre gives us a thoroughgoing sense of the stifling class boundaries and claustrophobia that affect such a place. At the same time, he writes a perfectly constructed, 130-page mystery with plenty of twists and surprises. He would never write a book like this again.
