Allegedly I read this book nearly 10 years ago, but I could recall none of it the second time. What is up with my withered memory? But these books are more experiential than intellectual, so details aren't important. Here are some mortals in a world so replete with ascendants, magic, creatures and war that the joy comes from seeing how they are used, worn down, almost die and then either miraculously survive or brilliantly die. Everything is telegraphed with utmost clarity; subtlety has no place here. Apparently this series only get more epic, which is surely a hard act to sustain, but it will be enjoyable finding out.
