I had high hopes for this, but alas, they were dashed. Several thoughts: * I am so tired of the evil corporation as villan cliche that it almost automatically kills my interest in the book to start. * I'm also sick of geek culture in general. This book seems to hold that the 1980s were the peak of human achievement, which they were not. * This book shamelessly ripped off the least interesting part of Snow Crash - an immersive virtual reality online game. Given all the other pop-culture references, and that Stephenson is name-dropped in the book, shouldn't this at least have been acknowledged? * The prose is at a terrible, sub-YA novel level.
As usual, Ms. Spencer's writing is engaging, her characters fully three-dimensional and the plot solid. I have a terrible time trying to decide which of her books is my favorite, partly becasue they are all so well written and partly because they are all so different. I tend to like some romance in my stories, and Tinker delivers that. Excellent, excellent book!
In the top three!
