Whether you're a fan of true crime or a fan of fiction, this story will keep you riveted. Terri tells her true-life story of almost getting murdered with such frankness that the 500-odd pages will fly by. I was shocked to hear that the man who in all likelihood perpetrated this crime is still out and free. Such a sad commentary on the justice system in Oregon.
I initially hated the main character, John Self. A vile sexist pig whose worship of money is hideous. But the book won me over and while I still wanted a bad ending for him somehow warmed to Mr Self and found him funny and entertaining. His views on the world contained some great insights and some fascinating commentary on the excesses of the 80s. It’s set in the build up to the royal wedding, so its interesting to compare to today’s run up to the street parties and commemorative teatowels. Despite his yobbish and usually appalling behaviour he uses some rich language. Overall I really enjoyed this book, but felt like I shouldn’t.
